Visiting the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao: the building, the hours, the tours
Gehry's titanium shell opened on 18 October 1997. Admission is €12 with the audio guide, €16 with the Fine Arts Museum, and we list 52 tours from €0 to €2,062.42, checked on 3 November 2026.
The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is a shell of titanium, limestone and glass on a bend of the Nervión estuary, and it opened on 18 October 1997. Frank Gehry drew it, about 33,000 thin sheets of titanium cover it, and the city around it has been explained by it ever since. This page is about the building and about visiting it: what stands outside, what hangs inside, what a ticket costs and when the doors are open.
One note on who we are. This is an independent site, not affiliated with the museum or with the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. We read the museum's own pages and checked them on 3 November 2026. What we list are tours and tickets from Viator, Tiqets and Civitatis, sorted on the pages below this one by what you actually get.
Most visitors ask first whether the outside is enough. Partly. Puppy, Maman and Buren's red arches stand outdoors, and Serra's steel spirals do not. The page follows the order in which people plan a visit: the history of the building, the art, hours and fares, the exhibitions running to spring 2027, the way there and what the 52 tours listed here add.
From a 1991 proposal to the opening in 1997
The idea is usually dated to 1991, when the Basque Government proposed a museum on a former harbor site and the Foundation agreed to run it. That year comes from Wikipedia and is repeated on two of its pages; the museum itself does not give it. What the museum does say is that the building went up between October 1993 and October 1997 on an old industrial pier in a bend of the Nervión, and that Gehry used CATIA, a program born in aerospace, to turn his crumpled models into structure a contractor could build.
Wikipedia also supplies the money: the Basque Government committed 100 million dollars and Ferrovial built the shell for 89 million. Treat both as reported figures, not audited ones. We could not find a dated source for the day the agreement was signed or the day Gehry was chosen, so we do not print either. The opening day, 18 October 1997, and the presence of King Juan Carlos I at the ceremony are Wikipedia's as well; the museum's page says only 'October 1997'. We use the day with that caveat.
Gehry did not draw a box and wrap it in metal. The metal is the building.
Titanium, limestone and a flower on the roof
The skin is titanium, limestone and glass. The titanium comes in roughly 33,000 sheets, very thin, with a rough finish that goes from silver to gold to grey depending on the light and the weather. Walk round the building twice in a day and you will think you have seen two buildings. The museum gives the total built area as 24,000 m² and the exhibition space as 9,000 m². Wikipedia says 11,000, and we follow the museum, which should know.
Inside, three levels wrap an atrium, joined by curved walkways, lifts in titanium and glass, and stairs. The skylight above is shaped like a metal flower. The museum counts 20 galleries, some orthogonal and some irregular; Wikipedia counts 19, so if the number matters to you, do not trust either one blindly.
The entrance is a quiet trick. You do not walk up to the museum, you go down a wide staircase from the plaza to the hall, so that the building never rises above its neighbors. The plaza lines up with Calle Iparragirre, and the La Salve bridge cuts across one end of the site. Gallery 104 slides under that bridge and ends in a tower that wraps around it.

The greatest building of our time.
Outside
Puppy and the plaza
Jeff Koons's Puppy sits in front of the museum, a dog built of stainless steel, soil and flowering plants. The museum dates the work to 1992, not 1997, which is the year it arrived in Bilbao. It stands 12.4 meters high in the museum's press-room caption, which is roughly a four-story building, and it is permanent.
It is the one piece of the collection every visitor photographs, and it works as a scale bar for everything else on the plaza.
The art you meet before the ticket desk
Several works live outside the galleries. The table lists those we could confirm on the museum's own work pages. One entry is a warning rather than a recommendation.
| Work | Artist and year | Where | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Puppy | Jeff Koons, 1992 | Museum Square, in front | Stainless steel, soil and flowering plants; 1,240 × 830 × 910 cm. |
| Maman | Louise Bourgeois, 1999 | Outside, by the footbridge | Bronze, marble and stainless steel; almost 9 meters tall. |
| Tall Tree & The Eye | Anish Kapoor, 2009 | The Pond area | 73 reflective spheres in stainless and carbon steel, 12.97 m high. |
| Fire Fountain | Yves Klein, 1961 (made after his death) | The pond | Five fountains of fire, every 15 minutes for one minute, in evening windows that shift with the month. |
| Arcos rojos / Arku Gorriak | Daniel Buren, 2007 | La Salve bridge | Red arches over the bridge that crosses the site. |
| Tulips | Jeff Koons, 1995 to 2004 | Not on view | On 3 November 2026 the museum's own page said 'Currently not on view'. Do not plan around it. |
Two corrections to things you will read elsewhere. Fire Fountain is by Yves Klein, not by Kapoor, and it only runs in the evening. The museum's schedule goes from 18:30 to 19:30 between November and February and shifts later in spring and summer, so check the month. And Tulips, which turns up in plenty of 'what to see outside' lists, was not out there when we checked on 3 November 2026.
Inside: one gallery you cannot skip
Richard Serra's The Matter of Time, made between 1994 and 2005, fills Gallery 104, the long space that runs under the La Salve bridge with no pillars. It is made of weathering steel, the kind that rusts to a protective brown, and it is permanent. It is also the best argument for going in: a photograph of the plaza tells you what the building looks like, and nothing prepares you for walking through those steel spirals.
Upstairs, in Gallery 305, Eduardo Chillida's How Profound Is the Air (1996) is alabaster, a very different material and a much smaller kind of silence. The collection also includes work by Yayoi Kusama and El Anatsui, but we could not confirm what was on view on 3 November 2026, and the museum rotates its rooms. For the current state of any single gallery, the museum's site is the source.
What is on until spring 2027
The museum runs several exhibitions at once. Dates below are the museum's own, read on 3 November 2026. They are printed in month-day-year order, which is how a 1 October 2027 end date can look like 10 January if you read it quickly.
| Exhibition | Opens | Closes | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pipilotti Rist, Ever is Over All | 1 Oct 2026 | 17 Jan 2027 | Running on 3 November 2026. |
| Steve McQueen, 66–76–26 | 9 Oct 2026 | 21 Feb 2027 | Running on 3 November 2026. One third-party page gives 14 February; the museum says 21. |
| Works from the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao Collection | 7 Nov 2025 | 1 Oct 2027 | The long-running collection display. |
| Dan Flavin, Some Light | 11 Nov 2026 | 4 Apr 2027 | Opens on 11 November 2026, the first of two November openings. |
| in situ: Zadie Xa, Seed Pattern | 19 Nov 2026 | 11 Apr 2027 | Opens on 19 November 2026. |
The Foundation's board also announced, on 24 June 2026, retrospectives of Philippe Parreno from mid-March 2027 and of Carmen Herrera from April 2027, around 200 works from 1937 to 2021 for the latter (reported by Orain; not yet on the museum's own exhibitions page). Plan around the five above and treat the other two as a good reason to check back in the spring.
Hours, fares and the Mondays that change every year
The regular week is Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 19:00. In 2026 the museum also opened on selected Mondays: 30 March, 6 April, every Monday from 15 June to 7 September, 12 October, and 7 and 28 December. The lists are published per year, so do not assume a Monday in 2027 without reading the new one.
Read the Monday list for the year you travel, not the year a blog was written.
Hours stretch to 20:00 during Holy Week (30 March to 12 April) and in summer (15 June to 13 September). The museum is closed on 25 December and 1 January, and closes at 17:00 on 24 and 31 December. The ticket desk shuts 30 minutes before closing and the galleries are cleared 15 minutes before.
| Who | Museum only | With the Fine Arts Museum |
|---|---|---|
| Adults | €12 | €16 |
| Students 18 to 26 | €6 | €8 |
| Over 65 and retirees | €6 | €8 |
| Under 18 | Free (under 12 with an adult) | Not stated |
| Members | Free | Not stated |
The ticket includes the audio guide. There are no refunds on tickets already issued. On the last day of every exhibition, entry from 16:00 to 19:00 is half price. Visitors with disabilities pay the reduced fare and a companion enters free, and groups of 20 or more pay a group rate. We found no regular free day. The museum opened its doors free for one weekend in October 2025 to mark its birthday, and that was a one-off, so do not build a trip on it.

Getting there
The museum's own directions list the options, and they are plentiful. Walking times are not on its site, so we give none.
- Metro: Moyua station, exit 'Ercilla-Guggenheim'.
- Tram: Euskotren, stop 'Guggenheim'.
- Bilbobus: lines 1, 10, 13, 18 and A7 to 'Museo 1 / Henao'; 13, 27, 38 and 48 to 'Alda. Recalde 31 e 11'; 11 and 71 to 'La Salve'.
- Train: Renfe at Bilbao-Abando, Euskotren at Atxuri.
- Airport: Bilbao's international airport is 15 km from the center, with a bus link.
The museum has no visitor car park. The nearest underground ones are at Plaza Pío Baroja and Plaza Euskadi. If you are coming from another city altogether, the country page works out the journey times.

Journey times, whether Bilbao works as a day trip and how many days to give it.
Photos, bags, access
Photography is for private use, without flash, and the museum's visitor tips ban tripods and selfie sticks in the galleries. Bags above 35 × 35 cm go to the cloakroom. Wheelchairs can be borrowed there and every restroom is accessible. The museum publishes an accessibility guide as a PDF, and describes Bilbao's public transport as accessible and adapted. We have not tried the lifts or the ramps ourselves and can say nothing beyond what the museum states.
The view back
Is the outside enough?
For some people, yes. You can read the titanium, see Puppy and Maman, and walk the estuary without a ticket. What you cannot do from the pavement is walk the atrium, stand in Gallery 104 or meet any of the work the museum keeps indoors.
Our rule of thumb: if you have one hour in Bilbao, look at the outside and spend it by the water. If you have half a day, buy the €12 ticket. The audio guide is already in it, so a guided tour is a different thing to buy: not access, but a person who talks.
What the tours add, and what they cost
The museum states no recommended visit length, so we looked at what the tours do: the guided museum visits in our listings mostly run 90 minutes to two hours. Across the three pages under this one we list 52 products: free walking tours that run on tips, e-bike rides, private guides, a small-group visit with entry, and multi-day trips. Prices go from €0 to €2,062.42, with a median of about €147.50, and between them they carry more than 5,600 reviews at a weighted 4.67 out of 5. Roughly two thirds of those reviews belong to four Civitatis products, and the free walking tour alone has 2,818, so the average says little about museum visits specifically.
The museum has its own rules for guides who bring a group, covered on the guided-tours page. The short version: you do not need a tour to enter. You need one if you want the building explained.
Three ways to book a visit
Each page sorts its tours by what you get.
Questions about the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao
How much is a ticket to the Guggenheim Bilbao?
€12 for adults, €6 for students aged 18 to 26 and for over-65s, free under 18, as of 3 November 2026. The ticket includes the audio guide. Re-check on the museum's site before you buy.
Is the Guggenheim Bilbao open on Mondays?
Normally no. The week runs Tuesday to Sunday. In 2026 the museum opened on listed Mondays, including every Monday from 15 June to 7 September. The 2027 list may differ.
Do I need to book in advance?
The museum's pages we read give no booking requirement for individual visitors. Groups with their own guide must reserve, and the museum may refuse entry without a reservation.
How long should I plan for the visit?
The museum gives no figure. Guided visits in our listings last 90 minutes to two hours, and the building is big enough that you can easily use more.
Is there a combined ticket with another museum?
Yes, with the Fine Arts Museum of Bilbao: €16 for adults, €8 for students and over-65s, according to the museum's fare page.
Can I see Puppy and the other sculptures without going in?
Puppy, Maman and the Buren arches are outdoors, as is the fire fountain in the evening. Serra's The Matter of Time is inside. Tulips is not on view.
Is this the museum's website?
No. This is an independent guide, not affiliated with the museum or the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. For the exact current terms, use the museum's own pages.
