Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is not open yet. Abu Dhabi's Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT) says it will open on Friday 11 December 2026, on Saadiyat Island, in a building designed by Frank Gehry. That is close to everything the public record settles. As of 3 November 2026 there are no published opening hours, no named opening exhibition and no visitor rules, and when we checked, the visit and about pages on the museum's own website were placeholders. This page separates what is known, what is only reported and what has not been published, so you can plan around the first and not be surprised by the third.

This site is independent and not affiliated with the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, with Guggenheim Abu Dhabi or with the DCT. We do not sell tickets to this museum, and we have no inside information: everything below comes from the sources listed at the bottom.

Everything here is dated 3 November 2026. If you read this after 11 December 2026, treat the "not published" column as out of date first. The building facts should still hold.

Known, reported and not yet published

The table sorts each topic into three columns. Known means it is stated on the DCT's page for the museum or on the Guggenheim Foundation's own site. Reported means newspapers or the state news agency say it and the museum has not confirmed it on a page we could read. Not published means we looked and found nothing.

Status as of 3 November 2026. DCT = Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism; WAM = Emirates News Agency.
Known (DCT and Foundation) Reported (press, not confirmed by the museum) Not published
Opening: Friday 11 December 2026.The date was announced on 28 July 2026 (The National). Tickets went on sale on 18 September (The National, WAM).Opening hours, closing day, last entry.

Size: 80,000 m2 built-up in total, including 11,600 m2 of interior galleries and 23,000 m2 of outdoor exhibition space.Gallery count: the DCT page says 28 galleries in one place and 30 in another. Gulf News and Emirates247 say 28; The National says 30.A single, official gallery count.

The DCT says the size of the collection has not been announced.Artists named: Pollock, Rothko, Warhol, Basquiat (The National); Kusama, El Anatsui, Hassan Sharif, Mohammed Kazem, Monir Farmanfarmaian (Gulf News). Network: the Foundation's history page lists New York, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, Bilbao and "the future Guggenheim Abu Dhabi."Valerie Hillings named inaugural director on 4 August 2026 (The National). Visiting rules: nothing.Nothing.Bags, photography, strollers, guides, ticket resale, accessibility services, audio-guide languages, restaurant, shop.

One discrepancy is worth explaining because it confuses many articles. Older guides quote 30,000 m2. That was the size of the first plan in 2006, according to Wikipedia. The DCT now gives 80,000 m2 as the total built-up area, of which only 11,600 m2 is indoor gallery space. The two numbers measure different things, and neither tells you how long a visit will take.

The gallery count is the other trap. The DCT's own page says 28 galleries in its description of the building and 30 galleries in its FAQ. We therefore give it as an interval, 28 to 30, and attribute any single number to the outlet that used it. Expect the museum to settle on one figure once it opens.

Abu Dhabi from 2006 to 2026: the dates we can stand behind

The museum has been announced, stopped, restarted and rescheduled. Most dates before 2025 come from press coverage and Wikipedia, since the DCT does not publish a history. The ones from 2025 on are reported by several outlets at once.

The origins

  1. 8 July 2006

    Agreement signed

Abu Dhabi and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation agree to build a museum on Saadiyat Island. The first plan was about 30,000 m2 (Wikipedia citing AP and CBS; Gulf News also gives July 2006).

  2. 2009

    The collection begins

Curators start gathering works for the museum (The National, Gulf News).

  3. 2011

    Construction starts, then stops

Work begins on the site and is suspended the same year. Completion dates slip several times afterward. Criticism of conditions for migrant workers on Saadiyat and artist boycotts date from these years (Wikipedia, citing the Guardian and Observer).

The growth

  1. November 2014 to January 2015

    A preview show

The collection is previewed in the exhibition Seeing Through Light at a visitor center on Saadiyat (Wikipedia, Gulf News).

  2. 2019

    Work picks up again

Gulf News says construction restarts in earnest.

  3. October 2021

    Builders appointed

The construction contract goes to Six Construct (BESIX) and Trojan Contracting, with completion targeted for 2026 (Wikipedia, Gulf News).

Today

  1. 5 December 2025

    Frank Gehry dies

The architect dies at 96. Khaleej Times and other outlets report it; the DCT's page calls the design one of his most ambitious late-career works.

  2. 28 July 2026

    Opening date announced

The DCT announces 11 December 2026 as the opening day (The National).

  3. 4 August 2026

    Director named

Valerie Hillings is named the museum's first director (The National).

  4. 18 September 2026

    Tickets on sale

Sales open on the museum's website, with prices reported by The National and WAM.

  5. 11 December 2026

    Scheduled opening

Opening day, per the DCT. A date can still move, so check again in the week before.

Who designed it, and what the building is meant to do

The architect is Frank Gehry, who died on 5 December 2025 at 96. Some outlets call Abu Dhabi his last major project; the DCT's page is more careful and calls the design "one of his most ambitious late-career works." We follow the DCT. The same page says the building rises to 88 m and that it is surrounded by the Arabian Gulf on three sides. Inside, 28 or 30 galleries open off a central atrium, and ten sculptural cones above them are described as inspired by traditional Arabian wind towers. The idea is shade and natural ventilation, which matters when the city's summer highs pass 40 °C.

If you know Gehry's titanium museum in Bilbao, which opened in October 1997, the vocabulary here is different: cones in place of curves. Our page on Gehry's Bilbao and the Bilbao effect covers that building and its record on visitor numbers.

Where it is: Saadiyat Island

The museum sits in the Saadiyat Cultural District, with Louvre Abu Dhabi (which opened in 2017), the Zayed National Museum and the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, all of which the DCT's page names as fellow institutions in the district.

We found no practical visitor information: no drive time from downtown, no word on parking, buses, shuttles or taxi stands. Do not assume how you will get there until the museum says. We will update the page when it does.

What will be inside

Officially, very little is settled. The DCT says the museum will show modern and contemporary art, mostly from the 1960s onward: painting, sculpture, installation, photography, moving image and new media. It says the collection will include local, regional and international work, with special emphasis on West Asia, North Africa and South Asia. It also says, plainly, that the size and details of the collection have not been announced.

The press has filled some gaps. The National names Pollock, Rothko, Warhol and Basquiat among the artists; Gulf News adds Kusama, El Anatsui, Hassan Sharif, Mohammed Kazem and Monir Farmanfarmaian and reports that a full list of works on display at opening has not been released. Counts of works in the collection range from "more than 600" in earlier statements to "more than 970" from more than 400 artists in recent coverage; we give neither as a fact. Emirates247 reports that the galleries are grouped by theme rather than chronology, but we found no official list of themes.

One structural point is only reported once. Gulf News says the collection is owned by the government of Abu Dhabi and not by the Foundation. Treat it as a single-source claim for now.

Tickets: what has been reported

The DCT page has a Book now button, but we found no prices on an official page. The figures below come from The National (18 September 2026) and WAM (19 September 2026), and we have not seen them on the museum's own pages. General admission was reported at AED 70. Entry was reported free for under-18s, university students in the UAE, citizens and residents aged 60 and over, and people with disabilities (The National adds a free companion ticket). Reduced tickets were reported by The National at AED 35 for teachers employed in the UAE, UAE military and Homat Al Watan members, and AED 50 for Fazaa and Esaad cardholders. Student and discounted tickets, according to those reports, are collected at the ticket desk on the day of the visit with identification.

Prices at launch can change, and a museum often adds time slots or combination tickets once real demand shows. For how tickets, discounts and city passes work at the other Guggenheim museums, see our tickets page.

Should you visit when it opens, or wait?

The answer depends on what you need to know before you go.

Go in the first weeks if you are in Abu Dhabi that week anyway, if the building is the reason you want to see it, and if you can tolerate not knowing the hours until the day before. Abu Dhabi's cool season runs from November to March, when daily highs at Abu Dhabi International Airport average 24.5 to 31.0 °C (WMO normals 1991-2020), against 39.6 to 43.4 °C from May to September, so a December opening lands in the best window of the year.

Wait if you are flying in specifically for it, if you need accessibility details, if you travel with small children and need facilities or a stroller rule, or if you want a particular artwork or show. Those details are exactly the ones the museum has not published. We will review this page in February 2027, two months after opening, when hours, the first exhibition and the rules should be public.

What not to promise yourself

  • Do not plan a day around opening hours. None are published.
  • Do not promise anyone a particular artwork. The list of works on show at opening has not been released.
  • Do not call it the largest museum in the world. The DCT says the largest Guggenheim, which compares it with the Foundation's other museums only.
  • Do not assume the opening date is fixed. It was announced on 28 July 2026 and the museum has slipped before; check again the week you travel.
  • Do not assume how you will get there. We found no published access information.
  • Do not trust older guides. Several still say the museum is open, or give 30,000 m2 or the completion dates of 2013, 2015 and 2017 that came and went.

Where Abu Dhabi fits in the Guggenheim network

The Foundation's history page describes its network as an international constellation: New York, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, Bilbao and, in its words, the future Guggenheim Abu Dhabi. That makes three museums open and a fourth due on 11 December 2026. Branches in SoHo, Berlin and Las Vegas have closed, and Helsinki turned the idea down twice; the story is on our page about the Guggenheim branches that closed. For the live museums and what each one holds, start at The Guggenheim Museums.
