Visiting the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice

€17 at the museum, closed on Tuesdays, last entry 17:00. We compare six tickets and tours from €18.50 and plan about 90 minutes inside.

The Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice is small enough to see in a morning and well known enough that people plan trips around it. It holds Magritte, Brancusi, Ernst, de Chirico and Picasso inside an unfinished 18th-century palace on the Grand Canal, with a sculpture garden attached. Most of what goes wrong happens before you reach the door: you pick a Tuesday, you buy the wrong product, you get off at the wrong stop.
This page covers what we checked on 3 November 2026: opening hours, prices, the vaporetto stops, the six tickets and tours in our catalog and a plan for about ninety minutes. We are an independent site, not affiliated with the museum or the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, and we sell third-party tickets and tours. The museum sells its own at guggenheim-venice.it. Peggy's story has its own page, Guggenheim in Italy, so we leave it out here.
One date matters right away. A new exhibition, Fucina degli Angeli, opens on 14 November 2026, and on 3 November the museum's calendar listed nothing else as upcoming.

Palazzo Venier dei Leoni: an unfinished palace on the Grand Canal

The museum is at Dorsoduro 701, on the Grand Canal between the Accademia bridge and the Basilica della Salute. The Venier family commissioned the palace from the architect Lorenzo Boschetti in the middle of the 18th century. The museum's own pages give 1748 in one place and 1749 in another, so we stay with the century's middle.

Only the first of five planned floors was ever built. That is why the front is low and clad in Istrian stone. The name probably comes from the lion heads on the facade at water level. Peggy Guggenheim bought the palace and garden in July 1949 and lived there for thirty years, so you are visiting part museum, part house.

A visit in about ninety minutes

The museum publishes no recommended length of stay that we could find. Ninety minutes is our own budget for a first visit: enough to cross the collection once and walk through the garden without hurrying. Add time if you take the €7 audio guide or linger over the temporary show.
  1. Book an entry slot online before you leave your hotel. Slots can sell out.
  2. Arrive on time, travelling light. Bags, backpacks and suitcases are not admitted, and the page we read does not say where you can leave them.
  3. Spend roughly 50 minutes in the permanent rooms, 15 in the garden and 25 in the temporary exhibition. This split is ours, not the museum's.
  4. Check the clock if you come late. Last entry is 17:00 and the museum's page says closing begins at 17:50, so a 17:00 arrival leaves you under an hour.
Ninety minutes is a budget, not a promise, and the museum does not publish one of its own.

What to look for in the galleries

We have not walked the rooms, so treat this as a reading list and not a review. Every title and date below comes from the museum's works pages. We found no list of what hangs where on a given day, so whether a canvas is on the wall during your visit is a question for the museum.

The Pollock row is there on purpose. Visitors turn up expecting Mural because Peggy commissioned it, and it is in Iowa. The garden is the other half of the visit: the Nasher Sculpture Garden, where Peggy held an exhibition of contemporary sculpture in 1949, the year she bought the house. Food and drink are not allowed, even there.

The Tuesday closure is the one that catches people. If you are planning a Venice week, put the museum on any other day. Beyond the bag rule, the museum does not allow visitors who are barefoot, bare-chested or in swimwear. Photos are for personal, non-commercial use without flash, unless a notice says otherwise. Hours and prices change with the season and for holidays, so look at the museum's page again before you travel.

Getting there by vaporetto

Take line 1 or line 2 to Accademia, or line 1 to Salute. Those are the two stops the museum names. It does not publish a walking time from either, and we won't invent one.

Choosing the right side of the canal

The Grand Canal has two banks and many stops. A vaporetto that takes you to the wrong side can add a crossing you did not plan. Choose Accademia or Salute and check the line's direction before you board.

Which ticket should you buy?

There are two honest ways in: buy from the museum, or buy a ticket or tour from a provider. Our catalog has six products, and the table lists them with the museum for reference. Prices are the “from” prices the providers published on 3 November 2026. We earn a commission if you book through our links, at no extra cost to you. The table follows price, not commission.

Option From Rating What the listing says

Viator: Peggy Guggenheim Museum private tour (2 h)€1834.7 (16 reviews)Entrance ticket included.
Viator: art walking tour (2 h)€1504.2 (5 reviews)Group walk through Dorsoduro, then a guided visit inside; entrance tickets included.
Start with the two ticket products. The Tiqets ticket costs €3 above the museum's adult price and the Civitatis one €1.50 above it. We have not compared cancellation terms or the form of the voucher and won't guess. Be wary of the name “Fast Track”: nothing in the listing promises that you won't queue. The museum, for its part, lets you choose a slot online until the slots run out.
The ratings need a caveat too. Across all six products the weighted average is 4.57 from 893 reviews, but 775 of those, 87 percent, belong to a single Tiqets ticket. The four Viator tours have 5, 6, 10 and 16 reviews.
A 5.0 from ten people does not outrank a 4.6 from 775.
Tours are a different purchase. The €65 private tour does not include admission, so adding the €17 ticket gives €82. Check on the product page whether the price is per person or per group before you compare it. The three tours that include entry cost €145, €150 and €183. If you mainly want the art without commentary, the ticket plus the €7 audio guide is the cheaper route. If you want someone to explain the rooms, a tour is what you are paying for.

When to go: seasons, the Biennale and acqua alta

The Biennale Arte runs from 9 May to 22 November 2026, so it overlaps with Fucina degli Angeli for nine days, 14 to 22 November. We found no official figure that ranks the months by crowds, so we won't tell you which one is quietest.
Acqua alta is the unquantified risk. The museum publishes no flood policy in the pages we read, so we can't say whether it closes. The MOSE barrier was raised for the hundredth time on 12 March 2025, according to the Italian transport ministry, and an Il Post article of 11 February 2026 counted 18 raisings since 28 January. Both facts say the barrier is in regular use, not how likely your day is to flood. If water is forecast, ask the museum.
