This is a walk organized around the plate. A local food and photography expert leads the group through five bars, with a glass and a pintxo (the Basque small plate) at each one. Together they add up to a full meal, and it is the way locals eat out.

The route and the menu change daily and mix traditional and modern cooking. Anchovies, octopus, bacalao in pil-pil sauce, squid, foie gras and local cheese all turn up, and a traditional dessert comes at the end. The drinks are matched to the food: local ciders, txakoli white wine, young and aged Tempranillo from La Rioja, beer, perhaps a vermouth, or the local kalimotxo for anyone who wants to try it.

Between bars the guide talks about the history and culture of the Basque Country and stops at La Ribera Market, though the focus stays on food and drink. On a Sunday the market shops are closed.

What's included

  • The group visits 5 bars for 1 or 2 pintxos (the most sophisticated tapas) and drinks in each one, representing the very best gastronomy of Bilbao.
