The Guggenheim comes last on this walk, after two neighborhoods that the classic routes skip: Bilbao La Vieja and San Francisco. A local guide specialized in art and culture leads a small group past murals and street art by local artists, and uses them to explain how Bilbao changed, with local life and social history along the way.

The walk starts at the Concordia train station, and the stops read like a map of the city's other history. Near the San Anton Bridge, named after an old tower house, the bars and restaurants show how the neighborhood has turned over. Bilborock-La Merced is a former 17th-century church that is now a cultural center with a concert hall, a cinema and workshop rooms. The old calcination furnace of the San Luis Mine recalls the mining past on the way toward Miribilla. In San Francisco, the square has the site of a 16th-century Franciscan convent, and an artistic production center where screen printing, sculpture and technology professionals share a space is a benchmark for the Basque cultural scene. A break with craft beer and a snack falls along the way.

The route ends outside the Guggenheim, where the guide explains the museum's impact on the city and its outdoor sculptures. Anyone who has already seen the building will find a different side of Bilbao here.
