Bilbao city and architecture tours: old town, river and the new skyline
Twenty tours from free to €507.58, median €54. Guided walks run €35 to €59 and e-bike tours €49. One free walk holds 78% of the 3,631 reviews.
Most people book Bilbao city and architecture tours because of one building and then discover that the city around it is the better half of the story. The museum stands on a former port and industrial quay, and in one generation the river banks around it filled up with new public works. A walk along the Nervión passes a metro entrance by Norman Foster, a footbridge by Santiago Calatrava, a congress hall, a 165-meter tower and, in the old town, a covered market from 1929.
This page covers the 20 walking, e-bike, food and private tours in our catalogue, from a free walk to a €507.58 private drive. We order the city in three layers (the old town, the streets around Plaza Moyua, and the river side) and show what each tour covers. We also say what a free tour is, what a tour costs per format, and what Bilbao's rain does to a plan. The museum has its own pages: one for the building, one for the guided visits.
We are an independent site, not affiliated with the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao or the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. Tours come from Viator, Tiqets and Civitatis, and we checked their listings on 3 November 2026.
What a Bilbao architecture tour shows you
Titles say "city tour", "highlights" or "art district", and the routes overlap more than the names suggest. Almost all start in the old town, cross to the river and end near the museum. What changes is the speed (on foot or by electric bike), the company and the depth of the commentary. The structures the tours and public sources keep naming are the metro (11 November 1995, stations by Norman Foster), the Zubizuri footbridge by Santiago Calatrava (1997), the Euskalduna conference centre (19 February 1999), Azkuna Zentroa (a wine warehouse of 1905 reworked by Philippe Starck) and the Iberdrola Tower by César Pelli (2011).
Bilbao in three layers
We find it easier to think of the city as three strips running roughly parallel to the river, and the tours usually walk them from oldest to newest. The table further down gives dates and names, not minutes, because we have no verified walking times between the stops.

Ratings collected by Viator, Tripadvisor and Civitatis
| Layer | Typical stops | Dates worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Old town (Casco Viejo) | Siete Calles, Ribera market, Plaza Nueva, cathedral, Arriaga Theatre | Ribera market opened 22 August 1929; the old town's own founding date is disputed, so we give none |
| Streets around Plaza Moyua (Ensanche) | Plaza Moyua, the pintxo streets of Diputación, Ledesma and Ercilla, Jardines de Albia | Moyua is the metro stop the museum's own directions name |
| River and Abandoibarra | Zubizuri, Euskalduna, Iberdrola Tower, the riverside walk to the museum | Zubizuri 1997, Euskalduna 1999, Iberdrola Tower 2011 |
Layer one: the old town
The Casco Viejo is where the walking tours begin. Expect the Siete Calles ("seven streets") and the Ribera market, which opened on 22 August 1929 and covers 10,000 square meters; in 1990 Guinness recognized it as Europe's largest covered market by area. The streets are narrow and the paving old, which matters with a stroller or a wheelchair. We cannot give gradients or step counts, and none of the listings does. Ask the operator.
Layer two: the streets around Plaza Moyua
Between the old town and the river lie the streets around Plaza Moyua. On a walking tour this stretch is mostly a connector. For food it is the opposite. Spain's official tourism site and the Barceló travel guide put the densest pintxo bars on Calle Diputación, Ledesma, Ercilla and around the Jardines de Albia, and the local habit of moving between bars is called ir de potes.
Pintxos
A food tour, or a free evening?
One tour in the catalogue is built around food: a pintxo and tapas tour with a local expert, €145 for three hours, rated 4.9 across 50 reviews. The listing's group size is not stated.
The old town's specialties, according to the same guides, are gildas, stuffed mussels and skewers of salt cod. We do not recommend individual bars, because the lists we found are from blogs, and a bar that was good in 2023 may have changed hands.
Layer three: the river and Abandoibarra
This is the strip the museum sits on, at Avenida Abandoibarra 2, and the one the shortest tours reach last. The riverside promenade ties together the Zubizuri, the Euskalduna and the tower, and it is where the e-bike tours earn their price.
We found no boat trips on the river in the catalogue, and we would not promise one. The "Romantic Quest: the Way of Love along the Ría" is a phone-app game on foot, from €6.99.

One number matters most: the free tour from Civitatis has 2,818 reviews at 4.6, which is 78% of all 3,631. Treat the 4.64 average as a reading of that one tour with 19 others attached.
The free tour, and what free means here
The Civitatis "Modern Bilbao Free Walking Tour" runs about an hour and 45 minutes and costs nothing up front; you tip the guide at the end. A second "FreeTour" on Viator is listed from €4.55. Free tours are a good way to find your bearings on day one. The review count says people take such tours, not that they beat the paid ones.
A free tour gets you oriented. A paid one gets you a smaller group and a guide who can stay on a subject for an hour.
Going inside any building on the route, the museum included, is a separate purchase.
On foot, by e-bike, or with a driver
The three shared guided walks cost €35 for two hours (283 reviews, 4.7), €48 for five hours and €59 for three hours through the art district. The cheaper walk is the safe pick for a first morning.
The two e-bike tours: the three-hour one at €49 has 249 reviews at 4.8 and can be booked as a small group or a private party; the two-hour one has 24 reviews at 5.0. All the cycling here is electric.
Private tours are nine of the twenty and range from €45 to €507.58. At the top end, the price includes a vehicle with a chauffeur and pick-up from a hotel or a cruise port. In the middle sit the €140 walks (one with 62 reviews at 4.8 on Civitatis) and a €325 private tour of Bilbao and the museum area that runs four and a half hours with 51 reviews at 4.98. One €500 product is a photographic walk across Bilbao and San Sebastián.
Weather
Rain, and what to wear
Bilbao is wet. Using 1991 to 2020 averages from AEMET, as reproduced on Wikipedia, the airport station records about 1,158 mm of rain and 124 rainy days a year. November is the wettest month, 171 mm over nearly 14 days. July is the driest, 52 mm over about 7 days. January highs average 13.5 °C and lows 5.3 °C.
We found no weather policy in the listings we compared, so ask each operator what happens when it pours.
Fitting a tour around the museum
The museum is normally closed on Mondays, with a few exceptions, so a Monday is the natural day for a city tour and a Tuesday the natural day for the museum. If you want both on the same day, start with the walk.
Most routes end on the river side, a short stroll from the museum, so the walk makes a natural lead-in.
For the building and what is shown outside it, read our museum page. For a guide inside, our guided-tours page compares 19 formats.
Not a single one of these 20 tours promises the museum ticket with certainty. The ones that pass the building do so from the outside, or offer the visit as an option. If entry matters to you, buy it separately or from the guided-tours category.
A word on the Vizcaya Bridge
Itineraries we read treat it as a separate half-day outing. We have not checked its opening, price or schedule, so we give none.
Going inside the museum?
Nineteen guided visits and tickets, compared by format, with the museum's rules for outside guides.
Questions about Bilbao city and architecture tours
How many city tours are there, and how much do they cost?
Twenty, from a free walk to €507.58. The median is €54, a shared guided walk costs €35 to €59 and an e-bike tour €49.
Do the tours go inside the museum?
None of the 20 promises the museum ticket with certainty. Some pass it from outside or offer the visit as an option. For tours with admission, see our guided-tours page.
Can I take a boat trip on the river?
We found none in the catalogue. Do not book a tour expecting one.
Is Bilbao suitable for wheelchairs and strollers?
The museum calls the city's public transport accessible and adapted. We cannot give gradients for the old town's streets, and the listings do not either. Ask the operator.
What if it rains?
It often does: about 124 days a year at the airport station. We found no rain policy in the listings, so ask before booking.
