Most walks go from old to new. This one starts in the present and ends in the Middle Ages, and the private guide uses that direction to tell the city's story backwards: from the museum that opened in October 1997 to the settlement founded in the early 14th century.

The talk covers the foundation of Bilbao and its role as a medieval commercial town, the heavy industrialization of the 19th century, the history of Basque heritage, modernization, and the artistic rebirth tied to the Guggenheim. Between the museum and the Old Town the route passes a 16th-century Gothic-Renaissance church beside the Albia Gardens, the stained-glass panel inside the central train station that shows Basque history, culture and industry, the riverside promenade along the Nervion, and the Arenal Bridge, the link between the Ensanche and the Casco Viejo. The Guggenheim is an exterior stop only, where the guide shows Gehry's architecture and the outdoor installations.

The last stop is Plaza Nueva, a neoclassical arcaded square, reached after the plaza in front of the neo-Baroque Teatro Arriaga, a 19th-century opera house inspired by the Paris Opera. A local pintxo and a glass of txakoli are the natural way to finish.
