This walk follows Bilbao in the order the city grew: the medieval core first, the nineteenth-century grid next, the modernized waterfront last. It starts at Teatro Arriaga and covers the whole center in a few hours, which suits visitors who want the city in one outing rather than one neighborhood.

The Old Town comes first, with the Seven Streets, the Church of San Anton, Santiago Cathedral and La Ribera Market. The route then crosses into the Ensanche, the district built during the nineteenth-century expansion, where the bourgeois buildings are the legacy of the industrial and financial boom. It finishes in contemporary Bilbao, around the Zubizuri bridge and the Guggenheim Museum, which the guide presents as markers of the city's modernization.

It is a general introduction, not a themed walk. Architecture, history and the layout of the center share the time.
