6-Day Madrid to Bilbao Wine Tour: Ribera del Duero, Rioja, San Sebastián and Guggenheim
This is a wine trip first and a Basque one second: six days that begin with hotel pickup in Madrid and end with a drop-off in Bilbao. Winemakers do much of the talking. The first day is Ribera del Duero, with a small family winery and a guided tasting led by the person who made the wines, then an underground winery in Aranda del Duero with 7 km of tunnels dug more than 9 m deep.
Two days in Rioja follow. Rioja Alta covers an estate winery, where classic and modern styles are tasted side by side, a 19th-century winery from the time Rioja producers began aging wine in oak barrels, and a small family winery run by the third generation. Rioja Alavesa has a chateau-style winery among the vineyards, an avant-garde winery by a famous architect, and a 15th-century underground cellar where the sixth-generation winemaker still treads the grapes by foot.
The last days turn to the coast: San Sebastián on foot, the French Basque villages of Biarritz and Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Hondarribia and the Jaizkibel viewpoint, then Bermeo, Gaztelugatxe and Bakio on the way to Bilbao and the Guggenheim. The tour runs for a minimum of 2 people, and a larger vehicle can be arranged for groups.

-
La Rioja
Rioja Alta. An estate winery and a tasting of classic against modern Rioja, then a famous 19th-century winery, from the time producers started aging wine in oak barrels (Crianza, Reserva, Gran Reserva). The third stop is a small modern family winery run by the third generation, where the topic is the kinds of oak used for aging.
-

-
Donostia - San Sebastian
Pickup in Rioja with luggage and a drive to San Sebastián (Donosti in Basque), on the Bay of Biscay and 20 km from the French border. A walking tour with a panoramic viewpoint and hidden corners, including how Queen Isabella II made the city a destination in 1845.
-
Biarritz
Hotel pickup in San Sebastián for three villages of the French Basque coast. First Biarritz, a whaling village turned luxury resort: the Grande Plage beside the Art Deco casino, the architecture and market, and the 1920s and 1930s summers of Europe's aristocracy.
-
Saint-Jean-de-Luz
Saint-Jean-de-Luz, a fishing town once called the city of corsairs. The stop covers the marriage of Louis XIV and Infanta Maria Teresa of Austria, then a walk through 17th-century houses, the food market and the old streets.
-
Hondarribia
Hondarribia, on the French border and called the best preserved medieval town in the area. Entry through the Santa Maria gate, guarded by the statue of the Hatxero, then the narrow streets and the fishermen's quarter for seafood and pintxos.
-
Jaizkibel
Back to San Sebastián over Jaizkibel mountain, with a stop at the highest point for views of the French Basque coastline and the option to stop anywhere for photos or coffee.
-
Bermeo

-
Bilbao
Bilbao (Bilbo in Basque), the most populous city in the Basque Country, between the sea and the mountains and long a commercial and industrial center of the Cantabrian coast. A walk through its main sights.
-
Guggenheim Museum Bilbao
The Guggenheim, which helped turn an industrial city toward modernity. Locals call it the doghouse because of Puppy, the sculpture of a dog by its doors. Inside, temporary and permanent exhibitions. The tour ends here, with drop-off anywhere in Bilbao.
