Day trips from San Sebastián to the Guggenheim Bilbao and the Basque coast

Now a worked example. Take the nine-hour tour that combines Bilbao, the museum and Gaztelugatxe. Nine hours is 540 minutes. The Gaztelugatxe walk uses 90 of them. If the vehicle covers the San Sebastián to Bilbao distance twice, at 60 to 80 minutes a time, that is another 120 to 160. What remains is between about 4 h 50 and 5 h 30 for the museum, lunch, parking, the stretch out to the coast near Bermeo and back.

A nine-hour day with a Gaztelugatxe walk in it has roughly five hours for everything that is not driving or stairs.

Gaztelugatxe belongs to the municipality of Bermeo, in Biscay. The hermitage of San Juan, dedicated to John the Baptist, stands on an islet reached by a stone bridge and 241 steps, according to Bermeo's tourist office. The same office puts the visit at about 1 h 30 on foot, counting the descent from the clifftop, the steps and the return by the same path. It advises against the walk for anyone with heart or breathing problems or reduced mobility.

So there is no entrance fee for an independent visit, but a free, timed ticket is required on the busiest days. The days are listed in a 2026 calendar on tiketa.eus. We could not read that calendar when we checked on 3 November 2026, so we do not list the days here, and the 2027 calendar is not out yet. Before you pay a tour operator, ask whether they book the slot for you.

The ticket is free. The 90 minutes and the 241 steps are not.

Two listings sell the islet as "Dragonstone", an operators' Game of Thrones label that nothing above depends on.

All eight leave from San Sebastián in the listings. Prices are the "from" figures in euro on 3 November 2026.

The €95 trip is the outlier, and it carries most of the weight: 231 of the 412 reviews on this page, 56%, belong to it. Its listing says the bilingual group option includes no museum ticket, and that option is probably the one the €95 refers to, though we have not confirmed it. If so, the museum's adult ticket, €12 with the audio guide included on 3 November 2026, comes on top.

The other seven are private. Private tours are commonly priced per party and group tours per person, but we did not confirm the basis for each of these. Check it at checkout before you divide anything by the number of travellers.

Gernika-Lumo was bombed on 26 April 1937 by the German Condor Legion and Italian aircraft, on Franco's side, and the raid is the subject of Picasso's Guernica. None of the thirteen titles on this page mentions the town.

On your own, the Euskotren from Bilbao takes about 51 to 54 minutes and the Bizkaibus about 1 h 05 to 1 h 10, per local information sites. A return trip is close to two hours of transport, which suits a separate day better than a corner of the museum day.

For the museum alone, a tour adds little: the road is an hour to an hour and twenty minutes each way and the ticket is €12. What a tour buys is Gaztelugatxe in the same day. We have no verified public-transport route to the islet, so we cannot time a do-it-yourself version, and driving yourself means fitting the free-ticket slot around your own schedule.

Five tours run longer than a day: 2 days at €625, 3 days at €875, 4 days at €1,320, 5 days at €1,450 and a 6-day wine and gastronomy tour of northern Spain at €2,062.42, which is listed under Madrid. Per day that works out between €290 and €344, against a median of €390 for the seven private single-day trips. You pay less per day, but the "from" price does not say what is in it, so check accommodation and meals.

Per day the multi-day tours cost less than a private day trip. What the price covers is the open question.

The 4-day and 5-day tours list the museum ticket among their inclusions.

These two cities have the same weather pattern with different amounts of rain. We read the 1991 to 2020 averages from AEMET figures on the cities' Wikipedia pages. Bilbao gets 1,158 mm a year, San Sebastián 1,747 mm, and San Sebastián is wetter in every month. November is the worst in both, at 171 mm and 227 mm. July is the driest, at 52 mm and 92 mm.

Our reading: May to September, with July first on rain alone. March, April and October are workable. From November to February we would not plan a nine-hour day with a coastal walk in it.
