The operator calls this its Dragonstone tour, and the first stop explains why: San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, a hermitage reached by 241 steps, where the Cantabrian Sea breaks against the cliffs. Transport is private, a local guide comes along, and the day keeps a relaxed pace.

The schedule is firm enough to plan around. The hike starts at 10:30, Bilbao begins at about 1:00 pm with the Old Town (Arenal, Barria Square, the Arriaga Theater and La Ribera Market) and a stretch along the estuary, and pintxos and drinks fall at midday. The climb is the physical part of the day, and the operator advises sport shoes and a spare T-shirt for anyone going all the way up.

The Guggenheim visit starts at 3:30 pm, with an audio guide. Gehry's building is clad in titanium, limestone and glass, and Jeff Koons's Puppy (1992) and Louise Bourgeois's Maman (1999) stand outside. Two points affect the booking: the museum ticket and audio guide are included only if that option is selected, and the midday pintxos are not in the price for the bilingual group.
