Small-Group Day Trip from Biarritz or Bayonne: Guggenheim Bilbao and San Sebastián (7/7)

Two cities in a day, in a small group, starting from Biarritz or Bayonne. Bilbao comes first, with the Guggenheim and then a guided walk through the Old Town. Lunch is pintxos with local wines, after which the group continues to San Sebastián for La Concha Beach, its Old Town and the city's food scene.

The Bilbao half pairs Gehry's titanium building, opened in 1997, with the arcades of Plaza Nueva and the Ribera Market, which opened in 1929 and covers 10,000 square meters. San Sebastián comes after lunch, with the seafront at La Concha and the narrow streets of the Parte Vieja.

The mix is museum, old streets and eating, and the day gives each a share rather than concentrating on one. The route crosses the border between France and Spain, so travelers from outside the EU bring a passport.

  1. Guggenheim Museum Bilbao

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Frank Gehry's building and a symbol of the city, with its contemporary art exhibitions and outdoor sculptures such as Jeff Koons' flower-covered Puppy and Louise Bourgeois' spider, Maman.

  2. Bilbao

A guided walk through the Casco Viejo: the 19th-century Arriaga Theatre, inspired by the Paris Opera House, and the Nervion River, which once drove the city's industry. The Santiago Cathedral is seen from outside, then the arcades of Plaza Nueva, where lunch is a light meal in a pintxos bar. The walk ends at the Ribera Market, Europe's largest covered market.

  3. San Sebastián landmarks

San Sebastián begins at the City Hall (Ayuntamiento), then follows La Concha Beach and how the city became a spa retreat for Spanish royalty. The route crosses the Maria Cristina Bridge over the Urumea River and passes the Maria Cristina Hotel and the Victoria Eugenia Theatre.

  4. Parte Vieja

The narrow streets of the Old Town, with the La Bretxa market, the Church of San Vicente, the Plaza de la Constitución and, from the outside, the Baroque façade of the Church of Santa Maria del Coro.
