Guggenheim Museum New York Entry Ticket: Permanent Collection and Exhibitions
Ratings collected by Tiqets
The ticket is the building itself, and the building took a long time to arrive. The Guggenheim foundation commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright in 1943. Solomon Guggenheim died in 1949, construction began only in 1956, and the museum opened on October 21, 1959, six months after Wright's death. In 2019 UNESCO listed it as one of eight Wright buildings on the World Heritage List.
The collection is older than the building. The foundation dates to 1937, and its first museum, the Museum of Non-Objective Painting, opened in 1939 under Hilla Rebay. Kandinsky was part of that early core. The permanent Thannhauser Collection adds Degas, Manet and Van Gogh, and the permanent galleries also list Picasso, Cézanne and Gauguin. The ticket covers the temporary exhibitions as well, which have been devoted to Kandinsky, Pollock and Mapplethorpe, among others.
No guide or add-on is attached, so the visit runs at the visitor's own pace.
